"This could be the last good thing we do together”

The original photo project I had with Darren was me shooting photos of him in the ceramics and sculpture lab in order to become friends. He is a very quiet individual that usually keeps to himself and I wanted to become friends with. He often says to me, “They don’t know me, I keep em’ guessin.

We spent a lot of time together in the sculpture and ceramic labs, and I documented his processes, but also documented him as a person mostly through my eyes. I have hundreds if not thousands of photos spanning from October through November of time spent together.

I stopped taking them after going through some rough patches in the last few months in the school year this photo project was made. That is why I am calling this photobook, “this could be the last good thing we do together” because he is graduating to move onto school somewhere else and I will remain here at Cal State LA

This series conceptually oscillates between past and present, and somewhat future through notions of anticipatory grief for a friend that was your first entry point to a place you call home. And now, that anchor, that point of contact, is now leaving.

The photographs might not be chronological, I might be more interested in telling a conceptual narrative about our friendship in a traditional black and white style.
